In Line of Separation season 2 episode 3, titled "Dreaming of Spring," tensions continue to rise in the small German village of Tannbach as the division between East and West becomes more apparent. The episode opens with a heated argument between farmer Georg Bach and his wife, who tells him she wants to leave Tannbach and join her sister in West Germany. Georg, who has lived in Tannbach his whole life and is deeply committed to his land and community, refuses to go with her.

Meanwhile, the town's mayor, Heinrich, is visited by an agent from the Stasi who informs him that they have reason to believe that someone in Tannbach is a spy for the Americans. Heinrich, who has been trying to keep Tannbach neutral and avoid getting caught up in Cold War politics, is naturally disturbed by this news and decides to launch his own covert investigation.

Elsewhere, Anke, a young East German nurse who has been working in Tannbach for several months, begins to experience a crisis of conscience. She starts to have serious doubts about the socialist ideals that have been instilled in her since childhood and begins to question her own loyalty to the East German regime.

As the winter drags on and tensions mount, the people of Tannbach begin to long for spring and the promise of new beginnings. Georg, who has been grieving the loss of his son, decides to plant a new orchard of cherry trees in memory of him. Meanwhile, Hilde, the town's schoolteacher, organizes a springtime festival that is intended to bring all of Tannbach's residents together in a spirit of unity.

However, not everyone is eager to embrace the changes that springtime brings. When a group of West German journalists come to Tannbach to report on the growing tensions between East and West, they are met with hostility and suspicion by some of the town's residents, who fear that their presence will attract unwanted attention and bring further trouble to their already troubled community.

“Dreaming of Spring” is an episode that is both hopeful and foreboding. The promise of new beginnings and the potential for change is juxtaposed against the harsh realities of a world in which geopolitical tensions threaten to tear apart even the closest-knit communities. Through the struggles of individual characters like Georg and Anke, viewers are able to see the profound impact that political ideologies can have on the lives of ordinary citizens. Ultimately, the episode serves as both a cautionary tale and a rallying cry for those who believe in the power of community to overcome the divisions that threaten to tear them apart.
