Lux receives a reminder that Christmas is coming up, and both Cate and Baze express their excitement for the holiday. Meanwhile, Cate and Ryan are in couple's therapy to work on their marriage, but their therapist has a surprise for them: he wants them to meet with their respective families to learn more about their childhoods. Cate and Ryan seem hesitant at first, but eventually agree to the session.
During the session, Cate's sister Abby shows up unexpectedly, causing tension between the two sisters. Cate reveals that Abby was always the favorite child in their family, causing Cate to feel neglected and unimportant. Ryan's father also joins the session, and Ryan admits that his father was always busy with work and never had time for him growing up.
As they delve into their pasts, Cate and Ryan learn to empathize with each other's experiences and begin to communicate more openly with each other. Abby also comes to a realization about her own behavior and apologizes to Cate for her past actions.
Meanwhile, Baze and Math partake in their own family therapy session with a group of strangers. Math is hesitant at first, but eventually opens up about his difficult childhood and strained relationship with his parents. Baze also reveals his own struggles with his father and how it has affected his relationships with women.
As they leave the therapy session, Lux suggests that they all spend Christmas together as a makeshift family. The group agrees, and the episode concludes with them all gathering together for the holidays, showing that even though they may not be related by blood, they are still a family in their own unique way.
