In Life Below Zero season 16 episode 4, titled "Inside Out," we follow the daily struggles of six Alaskans as they strive to survive in the harsh and unforgiving wilderness. From building their own shelters to hunting for food, these individuals face challenges that most of us can only imagine.
In this episode, we get a glimpse into the life of Agnes Hailstone, a Native Alaskan who lives with her family in the remote village of Noorvik, located on the Kobuk River. Agnes is a skilled hunter and trapper who has learned to adapt to the harsh conditions of the Arctic tundra. In "Inside Out," we see Agnes and her daughter, Tinmiaq, working together to prepare for the upcoming winter months.
At the start of the episode, we see the women setting up fish nets in the river to catch some much-needed dinner. They work quickly and efficiently, using their years of experience to make the process as easy as possible. As they haul in their catch, they discuss their plans for building a smokehouse to preserve the fish they have caught. Agnes explains that the smokehouse will not only help to make the fish last longer but will also give it a delicious smoky flavor.
Later in the episode, we see Agnes and Tinmiaq working on their new smokehouse. They have gathered wood and other supplies and are now beginning to construct the frame. As they work, they discuss what it takes to survive in the Arctic. Agnes talks about how important it is to always be prepared and to rely on one's own skills and instincts to get through tough times.
Meanwhile, over in Kavik, a remote camp located in the Brooks Range, we meet Glenn Villeneuve, a hunter, and trapper who has been living in the wilderness for over twenty years. Glenn loves the freedom that living off the land gives him, but he also knows that it means working hard every day just to survive. In "Inside Out," we see Glenn working on building his own log cabin. Glenn explains that the cabin will provide him with a warm and dry place to sleep during the winter months when temperatures can drop to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.
As Glenn works on his cabin, we see him hunting for his dinner. He sets up a trap for a fox and sets out to check his snare lines. Along the way, he encounters a herd of caribou and decides to take advantage of the opportunity to get some fresh meat. He stalks the caribou carefully, making sure not to spook them before he gets close enough to take a shot. After a successful hunt, Glenn returns to his camp to prepare his dinner.
Finally, we head to Nenana, a small town located along the Tanana River, where we meet Jessie Holmes. Jessie is a dog musher who uses his team of dogs to travel across the wilderness. In "Inside Out," we see Jessie preparing for a long journey across the frozen tundra. He loads up his sled with supplies and checks over his dogs to make sure they are ready for the journey.
As Jessie sets out, we see him navigating his way through the snowy landscape, with nothing but his dogs and his sled to rely on. He encounters some challenging terrain along the way, including deep snow drifts and icy rivers, but manages to make it through with his dogs by his side.
As the episode comes to a close, we see all of our subjects facing their daily challenges head-on, relying on their skills and experience to make it through another day in the wilderness. "Inside Out" gives us a glimpse into the lives of the brave men and women who call Alaska home and reminds us of the wild beauty and unforgiving nature of the Arctic tundra.
