LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales is a 5-part television series that premiered on Disney XD in 2015. The show follows the adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2 as they recount the events of the Star Wars films, starting from Episode I: The Phantom Menace all the way to Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
The series starts off after the destruction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. C-3PO and R2-D2 are cleaning up the wreckage and reminiscing about their adventures with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and the rest of the rebel alliance. As they reminisce, they recount the stories of the Star Wars prequel trilogy (Episode I - III) and original trilogy (Episode IV - VI) in a hilarious and charming LEGO style.
Anthony Daniels, who voiced C-3PO in the Star Wars films, returns to voice his iconic character in LEGO form. Tom Kane and Trevor Devall also lend their voices to the series, with Kane voicing Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, and other characters, and Devall voicing Emperor Palpatine, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other characters as well.
The first episode of the series, titled "Exit from Endor", takes place immediately following the events of Return of the Jedi. The episode sets up the premise of the series, with C-3PO and R2-D2 retelling their adventures to a group of young Ewoks. From there, the series begins to retell the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
Each subsequent episode retells the events of one of the Star Wars films, starting with Episode I: The Phantom Menace and ending with Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The episodes do an excellent job of squeezing the entire plot of each film into a roughly 22-minute LEGO episode, complete with all the major plot points and action scenes. Additionally, the episodes include plenty of humor and jokes that are sure to amuse both kids and adults alike.
One of the standout features of LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales is the animation. The series is animated entirely using LEGO bricks, and the attention to detail is impressive. From the Star Wars ships and characters to the planets and locations, everything in the series is made out of LEGO pieces. The animation is charming and colorful, and the LEGO style gives the series a unique flair that sets it apart from other Star Wars cartoons.
Another standout aspect of the series is the voice acting. Anthony Daniels once again proves that he is the perfect voice for C-3PO, and his performance adds a lot of humor and heart to the show. Tom Kane and Trevor Devall also do an outstanding job voicing the rest of the Star Wars characters, adding their own flair and humor to the roles.
