Legends of the Hidden Temple was a popular adventure game show that aired on Nickelodeon from 1993 to 1995. The show was hosted by Kirk Fogg and featured voice-over work by Dee Bradley Baker. The game show was inspired by the Indiana Jones movie franchise and that world of adventure was channeled into the show's set and design.
The premise of Legends of the Hidden Temple is that six teams of two kids each compete in physical and mental challenges in order to reach the hidden temple and retrieve an artifact, such as the Monkey King's Golden Medallion or the Good-Luck Watch of Empress Eugenie. Along the way, the contestants had to navigate through special rooms like the Jungle Crevice, the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, and the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Each episode started with a historical fact or legend, such as the sinking of the Titanic or the mystery of King Tut's tomb.
The competition began in the Moat of the show's set, where contestants had to cross a body of water by pulling themselves along a rope or swimming. The fastest teams moved on to the Steps of Knowledge, a giant staircase with three levels. The teams were asked multiple-choice questions based on the historical facts at the beginning of the episode. A correct answer would move them down the stairs one step, but a wrong answer would eliminate them from the competition.
The two remaining teams would then compete in the Temple Games, which tested both physical prowess and mental problem-solving skills. In one competition, the teams raced to build a bridge across a moat using giant foam building blocks. In another episode, teams had to match up pictures from a rotating wall with a corresponding image on their pedestals.
The final challenge was to retrieve the artifact from the Hidden Temple itself. The temple was a maze of secret passages and trap doors, and contestants had only three minutes to navigate through it and retrieve the artifact. Along the way, contestants had to avoid the "temple guards," which were staff members dressed in spooky costumes who would step out and "capture" a contestant, eliminating them from the competition.
Overall, Legends of the Hidden Temple was a show that appealed to both kids and adults. The costumes, set design, and special effects were all impressive for a game show, and the show's highlight was the exciting final challenge in the Hidden Temple. Dee Bradley Baker's enthusiastic commentary and voice-over work helped make the show even more exciting with each episode. Its fans fondly remember the show for its imaginative settings, thrilling competitions, and historical trivia.
