Beaver's parents, June and Ward, have plans to attend a fancy party as part of Ward's job requirements. Initially, they had planned to get someone to babysit Beaver and Wally, but when Ward's secretary can't find a sitter, June opts to let the boys stay home alone. However, she instructs them not to answer the phone or to open the door for anyone.
At first, Beaver and Wally are thrilled to have the house to themselves. They plan to have a fun night playing games and watching television. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse when Wally accidentally breaks a valuable vase while playing ball in the house. Fearing their parents' wrath, the boys attempt to fix the vase, but only end up making things worse.
As they struggle to come up with a plan, the phone starts ringing incessantly. Although they were told not to answer it, Beaver eventually picks up the phone to silence it. On the other end of the line is a woman who is looking for a man named "George." Despite the wrong number, Beaver strikes up a conversation with her, telling her his name is George and that he's an adult.
As the night goes on, Beaver and Wally continue to find themselves in increasingly difficult situations. They accidentally lock themselves out of the house, and later discover a gas leak in the kitchen. Throughout it all, they try to keep their parents from finding out about the broken vase.
Meanwhile, Ward and June at the party are growing concerned about the fact that they haven't been able to get in touch with the boys. They begin to fear that something might have gone wrong while they were away.
In the end, Ward and June rush home, relieved to find Beaver and Wally safe and sound. However, they are shocked and dismayed to discover the broken vase and the litany of other mishaps that have occurred throughout the night. Disappointed that their trust had been misplaced, Ward and June sit the boys down for a stern conversation about responsibility and the importance of honesty.
