In the Leave It to Beaver season 4 episode 4, titled "Wally, the Lifeguard", the viewer follows Wally as he takes on the responsibility of being the lifeguard at the local pool.
Initially, Wally is thrilled to have the job and takes his responsibilities seriously. However, as the day progresses, he starts to get bored and feels like he is wasting his time watching the same people swim over and over again.
Meanwhile, Beaver is busy pestering Wally, trying to find ways to make the job more exciting. Whenever Wally gets a break from his duties, Beaver tries to get him to play games like Marco Polo or diving for pennies. While Wally is a good sport about it, he remains vigilant about his responsibilities as a lifeguard, not wanting to let anyone get hurt on his watch.
However, his dedication is put to the test when the new girl in town, Julie Foster, shows up at the pool. Wally is smitten with her and finds himself distracted from his duties as he tries to keep an eye on her. In his infatuation, he fails to see a young boy who is struggling in the deep end of the pool.
When Wally finally realizes what is happening, he quickly jumps in and saves the boy, but not without the disapproval of the pool manager, who reprimands Wally for neglecting his duties.
Feeling embarrassed and ashamed of his actions, Wally is determined to make it up to the pool manager and prove that he can be a responsible lifeguard. With the help of his friends and family, he puts on a water safety demonstration that impresses both the pool manager and the community.
Ultimately, Wally learns an important lesson about responsibility and the importance of taking his job seriously. This episode showcases the growth and maturity of Wally as he navigates a challenging and unfamiliar situation while also providing some comedic moments through Beaver's antics.
