In Leave It to Beaver season 1 episode 31, titled "New Doctor," the Cleaver family encounters a new doctor in town. When Ward Cleaver's usual doctor is out of town, he decides to book an appointment with Dr. Barton, the new local physician. However, Beaver and Wally's initial impressions of the new doctor are less than positive.
The boys are apprehensive about seeing a new doctor and imagine all sorts of scary scenarios. They hear rumors about Dr. Barton being a quack and worry about him giving them shots or making them take medicine they don't like. When they arrive at the doctor's office, they are surprised to find that Dr. Barton seems quite friendly and gentle.
Despite the boys' initial worries, there does seem to be something strange about Dr. Barton. At first, it's hard to put a finger on what exactly it is – perhaps it's the fact that he seems too interested in their health or that he's a little too chatty. As the episode progresses, however, the family begins to realize that Dr. Barton's friendly demeanor may be a cover for something more sinister.
Throughout the episode, we see the Cleavers interact with Dr. Barton in different ways. Ward is initially skeptical of the new doctor, but is willing to give him a chance. June, on the other hand, is more trusting and doesn't seem to have any initial reservations about Dr. Barton. Beaver and Wally are both terrified of the new doctor and do everything they can to avoid him.
As the episode goes on, the family begins to notice some strange things about Dr. Barton. For one thing, he seems to have an unnatural interest in the boys' health records – asking about things like their appendix and tonsils, which have long since been removed. He also seems to be very secretive, refusing to answer any questions about his past or where he went to medical school.
At one point, Dr. Barton even shows up at the Cleaver's house unannounced – which makes everyone extremely uneasy. Wally and Beaver do their best to avoid him, but when they are finally confronted by the doctor, they find themselves in a terrifying situation.
The episode builds tension as we begin to see Dr. Barton's true motivations. Without giving anything away, suffice it to say that there is a big reveal towards the end of the episode that shocks the entire family. In classic Leave It to Beaver fashion, the problems are all resolved by the end of the episode – but not before we get a good dose of suspense and drama.
