The State vs. Beaver is the twenty-fourth episode of the first season of Leave It to Beaver. In this episode, Beaver becomes involved in a minor traffic accident with a car belonging to a school crossing guard. However, things take a turn for the worse when the guard, who is a rather gruff and unpleasant man, accuses Beaver of causing the accident and demands reimbursement for the damage to his car.
Although Ward and June don't believe that Beaver is at fault, they are nevertheless concerned about the possibility of legal action being taken against their son. This concern is compounded when the police arrive at the Cleaver house to question Beaver about the accident and inform him that he has been charged with reckless driving.
Feeling frightened and upset, Beaver confides in his friend Larry Mondello who suggests that they go to the courthouse to see a real trial and find out what might happen to Beaver if he is found guilty. However, the boys' curiosity ends up getting the best of them and they end up wandering into the middle of a real trial in progress.
The trial is for a man who has been accused of stealing a car, and as the boys watch the proceedings, they become increasingly convinced that the defendant is innocent. Moved by a sense of justice, Beaver decides to testify on the man's behalf, believing that his testimony will help to clear the man's name.
However, when Beaver takes the stand, he becomes confused and flustered under the pressure of questioning from the prosecutor. When he is unable to answer one of the prosecutor's questions, Beaver is labeled as an unreliable witness and dismissed from the stand.
Feeling even more upset and guilty than before, Beaver returns home to face the consequences of his actions. However, to his surprise, he is met with love and understanding from his parents who reassure him that his mistake was an innocent one and that everyone makes mistakes.
In the end, the crossing guard drops his charges against Beaver, and the family is able to put the incident behind them. However, the experience serves as a valuable lesson for Beaver, who learns firsthand about the harsh realities of the legal system and the importance of responsibility and honesty.
