Detective Briscoe and Curtis discover the dead body of a young woman in a motel room. The victim's identification reveals her to be the daughter of former police officer turned private investigator, Hank Voight.
Subsequent investigation reveals that Voight's daughter was an aspiring actress and was romantically involved with a married older man, who is identified as a prominent surgeon. The surgeon is initially ruled out as a suspect when his alibi checks out, but evidence leads the detectives to believe that he and Voight's daughter may have had a tumultuous confrontation the night of the murder.
As Voight and the detectives work in tandem to solve the case, race becomes an issue when both Hank Voight and the surgeon's wife are revealed to be black and tensions run high. The detectives must put aside their prejudices and work to unearth the truth behind the murder of Voight's beloved daughter before anyone else gets hurt.
As the investigation progresses, what was initially thought to be a straightforward case takes on unexpected twists and turns. The detectives discover that both the victim and the suspect have significant ties to a local theater group, and suspect that there may be more to the story than meets the eye.
As the episode progresses, the tension between the characters mounts, and tempers flare as everyone becomes more and more embroiled in the investigation. In the end, the case is solved in a startling and unexpected way, and the detectives are left to grapple with the ethical implications of their actions.
