The case gains attention when it becomes apparent that the victim was being used as a test subject in a methadone treatment program. What appears to be a simple homicide investigation soon leads the team to investigate the clinic where the victim was receiving treatment, uncovering a shocking and dark world of dubious medical practice and exploitation.
As the investigation deepens, the detectives are confronted with a host of potential suspects, ranging from the clinic's unscrupulous owner to the victim's fellow patients. The case is further complicated when additional bodies are discovered, leading the team to question whether they are dealing with multiple killers or a group acting in concert. Meanwhile, ADA Jack McCoy grapples with the ethical dilemmas of prosecuting a clinic whose primary aim is to help those struggling with addiction.
