Ep 6. Helpless

In this episode of Law & Order season 3, titled Helpless, a high school girl is brutally raped and left for dead in a park. The prime suspect is a known sex offender who was seen near the crime scene. However, the victim is unable to identify her attacker as she was hit on the head and suffered from amnesia. The detectives investigate the case and struggle to gather evidence without the victim's cooperation.

Detectives Greevey and Logan are assigned to the case and start by interviewing the victim's friends and family. They learn that the victim is a straight-A student and was on her way to meet a tutor before the attack occurred. The detectives then focus their attention on the sex offender, who has a history of violence and was recently released from prison. They find evidence linking him to the crime, but without the victim's testimony, they cannot make a solid case.

The victim's memory slowly starts to return, but she is still unable to identify her attacker. The detectives decide to take an unorthodox approach and stage a lineup with the suspected perpetrator and other men who fit his description. The victim is unable to identify anyone in the lineup, and the detectives are left with no leads.

Meanwhile, the sex offender is released due to lack of evidence, and the detectives are frustrated with their lack of progress. They decide to pursue other avenues and learn that the victim's tutor had a criminal record involving sexual assault. Upon further investigation, they discover that the tutor had a motive to assault the victim and had been stalking her for weeks.

The detectives track down the tutor and arrest him for the assault. He confesses to the crime, and the victim's memory is fully restored, allowing her to testify in court. The jury finds the tutor guilty, and he is sentenced to life in prison.

The episode ends with the victim's family expressing their gratitude to the detectives for their hard work and the arrest of the perpetrator. The detectives reflect on the case and the difficulties they faced, but ultimately, their perseverance led to the conviction of the true offender.
