Beef is the 20th episode of the 11th season of the hit TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which premiered on April 7, 2010. This riveting episode begins with a woman named Jocelyn Proust (Romy Rosemont) being suffocated with a pillow in her sleep by an unseen attacker at a luxurious retreat center. The investigation is led by the tough but empathetic SVU detectives, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), John Munch (Richard Belzer), and Odafin Tutuola (Ice-T), who are all committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Initially, the detectives focus on the victim's husband, Ted (Josh Randall), and his possible involvement in the murder. Ted disassociates himself from his wealthy family and claims that he and his wife were trying to start anew by opening a small organic beef farm. However, their efforts were not well-received by the locals, who objected to the idea of an out-of-towner taking over their land.

The detectives soon learn that Jocelyn and Ted were not the only ones vying for control of the land as they collide with a real estate mogul, Harold Moss (Joel Grey), who is interested in developing the property. Moss denies any wrongdoing, but his past shady dealings come to light, and he is considered a suspect for the murder. He becomes the prime suspect when it is discovered that Jocelyn refused to sell her land to him, thereby causing him to lose a lot of money.

The plot thickens when another murder occurs, and this time the victim is one of the protesters who were demonstrating outside the Proust's farm. With the death count rising and the detectives short on leads, they must race against the clock to find the killer before anyone else is harmed.

Further complicating the case, the SVU detectives must also navigate the complex interpersonal relationships between the Proust family, who are keeping secrets from each other. Jocelyn's sister, Claire (Tamara Tunie), her mother, Lila (Mariette Hartley), and her father, Glendon (Mitchell Ryan), all have conflicting interests that could implicate them in the murders.

As the case progresses, the detectives also delve into the dark underbelly of the farming industry, where animal rights activists and large-scale factory farming operations clash. The investigation takes a gruesome turn, revealing the horrors animals endure and the extreme measures people will take to protect their interests.

The episode's climax is a nail-biting race to save a life and stop the killer before they can strike again. The detectives must draw on their years of experience, sharp instincts, and fierce determination to solve this case and bring the perpetrator to justice.

Beef is a gripping episode that takes the audience on a thrilling ride through the world of high-stakes land deals, family secrets, and the lengths people will go to protect their interests. Through the eyes of the SVU detectives, the viewers are once again reminded of the darkness that exists in our world, but also of the hope, compassion, and resilience of those who seek to combat it.
