Detectives Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) investigate the gruesome murder of a doctor who specialized in hypnosis and regression therapy. The victim, Dr. Anne Morella (Patricia Richardson), had been found tied up and drowned in a bathtub, and her patient files were scattered throughout her office.
As Goren and Eames delve deeper into the case, they learn that Morella had been working with a troubled young man named Ryan (Adam Driver), who had been seeking hypnotherapy to help him overcome his numerous mental and emotional issues. But as they unravel the mystery surrounding Morella's death, they begin to suspect that Ryan may have been more involved in the crime than he initially let on.
Meanwhile, Detective Mike Logan (Chris Noth) and his new partner, Detective Nola Falacci (Alicia Witt), are investigating a separate case involving a vicious gang of drug dealers. The detectives struggle to find any leads, until they discover a surprising connection between their case and Morella's murder.
As the two teams of detectives work together to unravel the intertwined mysteries, they find themselves caught in a dangerous web of lies, deceit, and betrayal that threatens to consume them all. With time running out, Goren and Eames must use all of their training and expertise to catch the killer before he strikes again.
