Detectives Goren and Eames are called to investigate the murder of a young woman who was found strangled in her apartment. As they begin their investigation, they soon realize that the victim had a history of mental illness and had been struggling with paranoia and delusions.
As they dig deeper into the case, Goren and Eames are led to a psychiatric hospital where the victim had been a patient. They discover that the hospital had been experimenting with a controversial new treatment for schizophrenia that involved administering high doses of medication.
The detectives soon realize that the victim had been given the experimental treatment at the hospital and that it had caused her to become extremely paranoid and delusional. As they investigate further, they discover that other patients at the hospital had also been given the treatment and were exhibiting similar symptoms.
As Goren and Eames delve deeper into the connection between the hospital and the victim's murder, they uncover a web of deceit and cover-ups. They learn that the hospital had been bribing patients to participate in the experimental treatment, and that they had been covering up the dangerous side effects.
As the detectives race to uncover the truth, they find themselves drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the hospital's administrators, who will stop at nothing to protect their reputation and keep their secrets safe.
With time running out, Goren and Eames must use all of their skills and expertise to bring the perpetrators to justice and stop the dangerous treatment from being administered to more patients.
In the end, the detectives are able to unravel the web of deceit and bring those responsible to justice. But the tragic case leaves them questioning the ethics of the medical profession and the lengths people will go to protect their own interests.
