Detective Goren and his partner Detective Eames investigate a murder at a video game company. The victim, a program lead named Ian, was shot with a gun that was mistaken for a prop gun. Goren and Eames discover that Ian had a strong dislike for one of his co-workers, Ethan, and that Ethan had recently been fired for stealing game code.
Further digging uncovers a larger issue at the company- the development team had become divided into two factions that disagreed on which direction the game should take. Ian was part of the "purist" group that wanted to keep the game's original concept intact, while Ethan belonged to a group that wanted to include more violent and action-packed elements.
As the detectives interview various employees, they come across a young intern named Mike, who was seemingly too interested in the case. Goren suspects that Mike may have had a more direct involvement in Ian's murder and begins to question him.
Meanwhile, Eames discovers that Ian's girlfriend, a fellow programmer, had been secretly working on a competing game that was similar to his own. This adds another layer of motive to the case, as it appears that Ian may have been killed over intellectual property and professional jealousy.
As more evidence comes to light, the detectives uncover a complex web of relationships and rivalries within the video game company. They learn that the game's creator, a reclusive designer named Sylar, had been manipulating the team members against each other in order to maintain control over the project.
In the end, Goren and Eames zero in on the killer's motive and identity, but must race against the clock to prevent another murder from taking place. With the help of their investigative skills and technology, they are able to solve the case and bring the perpetrator to justice.
