The show Last of the Summer Wine season 4 episode 9 "Small Tune on a Penny Wassail" follows the adventures of three elderly friends in the picturesque town of Holmfirth, England. The trio consists of easy-going Norman Clegg, fast-talking and money-hungry Cyril Blamire, and wily oldster Compo Simmonite. They often cause mayhem and mischief throughout the town, to the annoyance of the local authorities.

In this particular episode, the friends are caught up in the preparations for the upcoming Penny Wassail, a traditional pagan festival that celebrates the coming of spring. The town is buzzing with excitement, and everyone is looking forward to the festivities. However, the three friends have their own plans, and things do not go as expected.

Norman Clegg finds himself unexpectedly smitten with a local woman who catches his eye, but he is too shy to make a move and leaves it up to his friends to help him. Cyril Blamire, always the opportunist, decides to make the most of the festivities by selling penny whistles to the crowds. He enlists Compo's help, but their business plans are derailed when they encounter an unexpected rival.

Meanwhile, Compo has his heart set on impressing his childhood sweetheart, Nora Batty. He is determined to give her a new washing line, but he needs to come up with the funds to make it happen. Things take a hilarious turn when he decides to raise money by entering a local pig race.

As the festivities ramp up, the trio finds themselves in increasingly hilarious situations, causing chaos and confusion wherever they go. Despite their best efforts, things do not go smoothly, and they are forced to improvise in order to save the day.

In the end, the trio manages to pull off a successful Penny Wassail, thanks to their ingenuity and their willingness to go the extra mile. They may not have achieved everything they set out to do, but they have each other, and that is all that matters in the end.
