In the fourth season of Last of the Summer Wine, episode six is titled "Greenfingers." The episode follows the three best friends and regular characters of the show, Compo, Clegg, and Foggy as they embark on a new adventure. This time they attempt to make a little money by starting a gardening business.
As the episode opens, Compo, Clegg, and Foggy are relaxing in Compo's garden, enjoying the beautiful surroundings and discussing their financial difficulties. They lament the high cost of living and the trouble of making ends meet on their meager pensions. It is then that Compo announces his plan to start a gardening business, as he considers himself to be quite the 'green thumb.' Clegg and Foggy quickly agree to join in the endeavor, and they set out to find their first client.
Their first job is at a rather large estate owned by a wealthy family. The three set to work, but it is apparent early on that they aren't the most experienced or knowledgeable gardeners. They mow down a flower bed, knock over some pots, and destroy a decades-old grapevine. The wealthy homeowner is understandably upset, but the trio is determined to make things right and keep their fledgling business alive.
After a near disaster, they come up with a clever plan to fix the grapevine- a homemade, secret plant food that turns out to be very effective. The homeowners are pleasantly surprised by the now beautiful garden, and they decide to pay the trio a generous fee. Thrilled with their first success, Compo, Clegg, and Foggy begin to take on more clients, resulting in many humorous misadventures and narrow escapes.
Throughout the episode, we see the trio struggle with the difficulties of running a small business and providing quality service. They make frequent visits to the local library to research gardening techniques and read up on the latest trends in the industry. They even begin to invest in better equipment and more efficient tools, hoping to attract more customers and increase their profits.
As the episode progresses, the trio encounters a host of quirky characters, including a bickering husband and wife who keep demanding unusual garden treatments, and a young couple who want a unique and personal touch for their garden wedding. The trio even encounters a rival undercutter who threatens their business and takes away some of their customers.
Overall, the episode is full of laughs and endearing moments as we watch the trio navigate the ups and downs of their newfound business venture. Their perseverance and determination are admirable, even as they bumble along and get into one predicament after another. The trio's love of nature and their willingness to learn eventually pay off in a satisfying conclusion, with a lovely garden and happy customers.
Last of the Summer Wine season 4 episode 6, "Greenfingers" is a heartwarming and entertaining addition to the show's extensive library of hilarious and memorable episodes.
