The beloved British sitcom Last of the Summer Wine follows the daily lives and antics of a group of elderly friends living in the small town of Holmfirth. Season 3 episode 4, titled "Cheering Up Gordon," continues their lighthearted escapades.
The episode opens with Sid and Ivy driving into town, complaining about how slow everyone else is driving. They arrive at the local pub, The Railway Arms, where they run into Compo and Clegg. The gang discusses their friend Gordon, who has been feeling down lately because he's been told his son is moving away. They decide they need to do something to lift his spirits.
Meanwhile, Gordon is having a tough time dealing with his son's imminent move. He confides in his wife, Nora, who tries to console him but ends up making him feel worse. He leaves the house, desperate for some time alone.
As Gordon wanders around town, he bumps into Norman, the local inventor. Norman is testing out his latest invention, a motorized bike. Gordon is impressed and decides to take it for a spin. He loses control of the bike and crashes, injuring himself in the process.
Back at The Railway Arms, the gang is discussing different ways to cheer Gordon up. Compo suggests they hire a stripper, but the others shoot the idea down. They ultimately decide to throw a surprise party for him at The Railway Arms.
Gordon arrives home injured, with a sore arm and a bruised ego. Nora fusses over him, bringing him tea and sympathy. Gordon insists he'll be fine but secretly worries about his son leaving. Nora tells him he needs to get out of the house and suggests he go down to the pub for a few pints.
When Gordon arrives at The Railway Arms, he's surprised to find all his friends waiting for him inside. They've decorated the pub with balloons and streamers and have even baked him a special tart. Gordon is touched by their thoughtfulness.
As the party progresses, the gang tries to lift Gordon's spirits by telling him funny stories and jokes. Compo even does a silly dance to make him laugh. Despite their efforts, however, Gordon remains despondent.
Just as the party seems to be winding down, Norman bursts in with his motorized bike. He proudly shows off his invention to the group, but they're all skeptical. Gordon, feeling a bit reckless after the drinks he's had, decides to take the bike for a spin. The gang watches in amazement as he drives around the pub, dodging tables and chairs.
After the ride, Gordon is grinning from ear to ear. He thanks his friends for throwing him the party and tells them he's feeling much better. The episode ends with the gang playing a game of cards, happy to have cheered up their friend.
Overall, season 3 episode 4 of Last of the Summer Wine is a heartwarming and humorous look at the power of friendship and how even the smallest gesture can make a difference in someone's day.
