In Last of the Summer Wine season 2 episode 7, titled "Northern Flying Circus," the residents of Holmfirth are excited to welcome a traveling circus to their town. However, when the performers arrive, they find out that the circus is not what they expected.
The circus consists of a group of Northern performers who call themselves the "Flying Circus." They perform death-defying stunts, such as jumping through burning hoops and swinging from the trapeze. However, their acts are far from polished, and they frequently make mistakes that put their lives in danger.
The circus performers quickly become a source of fascination for the residents of Holmfirth. Compo, Clegg, and Foggy decide to attend one of the shows, but quickly discover that the Flying Circus is not as exciting as they thought it would be. They endure a series of frustrating mishaps, including a clown who can't seem to get his tricks right and a tightrope walker who keeps falling off.
Despite the circus's many flaws, the trio of friends becomes enchanted with the idea of starting their own circus. They even go so far as to propose the idea to some of the Flying Circus performers, who are skeptical of their plans at first but eventually agree to help them out.
Compo, Clegg, and Foggy set to work building their own circus equipment out of scrap materials, including an old bathtub that they turn into a cannon. They also recruit some other locals to help out with the show, including a group of youngsters who serve as acrobats and a woman who puts on a sensual snake-charming act.
As the big day approaches, the trio begins to have second thoughts about their circus endeavor. They realize that they have no clue how to put on a successful show, and that their makeshift equipment is liable to fall apart at any moment.
Despite their fears, they decide to go through with the show. It's a disaster from start to finish, with performers falling off equipment and getting stuck in tight spaces. However, the audience seems to enjoy the show, and the trio of friends bask in the glow of success (such as it is).
In the end, "Northern Flying Circus" is a heartwarming episode that shows the power of friendship and the importance of pursuing your dreams, no matter how impractical they may seem. It's a delightful addition to the beloved Last of the Summer Wine series and a must-watch for fans of the show.
