Last of the Summer Wine is a British sitcom about a group of elderly males who live in the fictional town of Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, England. The show premiered in 1973 and ran for 31 seasons, becoming the longest-running sitcom in the world until it ended in 2010.
In season 10 episode 4, titled "That Certain Smile", the three main characters, Compo, Clegg, and Foggy, are up to their usual antics. Compo has fallen for a woman named Edie, who runs a mobile library. He's convinced that Edie is the love of his life and wants nothing more than to impress her. However, Clegg and Foggy are not convinced that Edie is the right match for Compo. They think he's making a mistake, and they don't hesitate to voice their opinions.
The episode begins with Compo sitting on a bench, admiring Edie as she drives by in her mobile library. He's so smitten with her that he can't even speak when she stops to say hello. Clegg and Foggy notice Compo's infatuation and decide to intervene. They try to point out all of Edie's flaws, but Compo is too much in love to listen.
Later on, Compo decides to impress Edie by borrowing a book from her mobile library. He doesn't really care what the book is about, as long as it makes him look smart. He chooses a book on philosophy and begins to read it. However, he quickly becomes bored and falls asleep. When he wakes up, he realizes that he's lost the book somewhere on his walk. Determined to find it, he retraces his steps, with Clegg and Foggy in tow.
As they search for the lost book, they come across a group of women who are practicing for a beauty contest. The women are friendly and invite Compo, Clegg, and Foggy to watch their rehearsal. Compo is particularly interested in one of the contestants, a woman named Thelma. However, Thelma seems more interested in Clegg. This creates a bit of a rivalry between the two friends.
As they continue their search for the lost book, they run into all sorts of obstacles. They stumble upon a bull that's escaped from a nearby field, get chased by a group of angry bees, and even end up stuck in a pond. Through it all, Compo remains convinced that he'll find the book and impress Edie. Clegg and Foggy, however, are starting to lose hope.
Eventually, they come across Thelma again. She tells them that she's found the book and offers to return it to Edie for them. Compo is thrilled, but Clegg and Foggy are suspicious. They can't believe that Thelma would just hand over the book without a catch. They decide to follow her to the mobile library, where they witness her trying to bribe Edie with a cash reward for the book. Edie refuses the bribe, and Thelma storms off in a huff.
In the end, Compo never gets the chance to impress Edie with the philosophy book. However, he does get a kiss from Thelma, which makes him very happy. Clegg and Foggy are content knowing that they've saved Compo from making a mistake with Edie. The three friends continue on their way in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, looking for their next adventure.
