Mike Baxter (Tim Allen) faces a difficult challenge in season 2 episode 3 of Last Man Standing titled "High Expectations." In this episode, Mike's middle daughter Mandy (Molly Ephraim) is suddenly faced with the stress of meeting high expectations at college. Despite a lifetime of being told she could achieve anything she wants, Mandy realizes that the expectations set upon her are harder to handle than she imagined.
As Mandy struggles, her father Mike does his best to support her, however his methods may be a little old-fashioned. He reminds Mandy that he's been in her shoes before, and that sometimes it's important to take time to recharge and have some fun. But Mandy doesn't want to let anyone down, including herself, and doesn't know if she can handle anything less than perfection.
Meanwhile, at the office, Mike's marketing team is struggling to come up with a new product idea for a client. Mike finds himself constantly at odds with Kyle (Christoph Sanders), who wants to "think outside the box," while Mike remains dedicated to tried-and-true methods.
With pressures mounting at work and at home, Mike has to figure out how to handle his own set of high expectations, all while watching his daughter struggle.
Throughout the episode, viewers will see the struggles and triumphs of parenting, as Mike and his wife Vanessa (Nancy Travis) try to guide their children through life's obstacles. Along the way, they'll tackle important issues like the importance of perseverance, the dangers of overworking, and the value of a good support system.
Ultimately, viewers will see that even when life's expectations seem too high to bear, with a little support and a willingness to try, anything is possible.
