Laid is an Australian television series that aired from 2011 to 2012. The show revolves around the life of its protagonist, Roo McVie, and her adventures in contemporary dating. Roo is a thirtysomething woman who finds herself single at a time when most of her friends are settling down and starting families. Feeling out of step with the rest of the world, Roo embarks on a series of sexual encounters that lead her into a variety of bizarre and hilarious situations.

The show is created by Marieke Hardy, Kirsty Fisher, and Liz Doran. It was produced by Liz Doran and directed by Trent O'Donnell. The show stars Alison Bell as Roo McVie, along with Celia Pacquola, Toby Truslove, and Abe Forsythe. The show ran for two seasons, with each season containing six episodes.

The show’s first season revolves around Roo and her group of friends, who are all going through their own set of unique problems. Roo is trying to find her place in the world and is feeling lonely and disconnected from her life. Her best friend, Hannah (Pacquola), is struggling with the challenges of parenthood while her other close friend, Michelle (Doran), is dealing with her own issues in her relationship. Meanwhile, Roo’s brother, Alex (Truslove), is going through his own mid-life crisis.

As the season progresses, Roo begins to have a series of one-night stands, each leading her into increasingly bizarre and hilarious situations. From trying to escape a possessed ventriloquist doll to unintentionally taking mushrooms at a party, Roo finds herself in some truly strange circumstances.

Despite the show’s humorous overtones, it also deals with some deep themes such as loneliness, depression, and the search for meaning in life. The show artfully balances difficult subject matter with humor, making it an enjoyable and thought-provoking watch.

The second season picks up where the first left off, with Roo continuing to navigate the murky waters of modern dating. However, this season focuses more on the relationships that Roo develops over the course of the series. From her tumultuous relationship with the charming Tim (Forsythe) to her search for a meaningful connection with Duncan (Truslove), Roo’s journey is fraught with all of the trials and tribulations that come with trying to find love in the modern world.

The show’s writing is clever and witty, with sharp dialogue and a keen sense of humor. The characters are well-drawn and full of idiosyncrasies, making them feel like real people rather than caricatures. The show is also visually stylish, with inventive visual gags and a lively color palette. The show manages to be both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a standout entry in the pantheon of Australian television.

Alison Bell gives a standout performance as Roo, imbuing the character with both humor and pathos. Her chemistry with the rest of the cast is palpable, making their scenes together feel natural and unforced. The supporting cast is also excellent, with each actor bringing their own unique spin to their respective characters.

Overall, Laid is a smart, funny, and engaging show that manages to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. With a strong cast and excellent writing, the show is a standout entry in the realm of Australian television. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, young or old, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.
