L'Accident is a French television series from 2016-2017 that premiered on Acorn TV. The show revolves around the life of Gabriel Cauvy, played by Bruno Solo, a respected city planner working in the town of Saint-Malo. Gabriel is happily married to Claire, played by Charlotte Des Georges, and they have a son, Théo. The family's life is turned upside down when a mysterious car accident takes place that leaves Gabriel's wife in a coma.
As the story progresses, we find that the car Gabriel's wife was driving was sabotaged, which makes his life and his son's life very complicated. Gabriel becomes the prime suspect in the case, and the police and the public eye put pressure on him. The show links the accident with a broader plot that reveals elements of personal vengeance, political fallout, as well as the politics of small towns. Gabriel, determined to uncover the truth, takes the investigation into his own hands, and while doing so, he risks his career, reputation, and even his family's safety.
The show is based on a novel of the same name by Guillaume Musso and was produced by Elephant Story. It consists of six 52-minute episodes, each one exploring different angles of the plot. L'Accident is a well-crafted crime thriller, that keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first minute through to the last, with many twists and turns that keep you second-guessing.
The performances of the actors are impressive, especially Bruno Solo and Charlotte Des Georges. Bruno Solo's performance as Gabriel Cauvy perfectly embodies the character's anguish, guilt, and determination. His struggles and emotionally charged scenes are played with precision, making him a very likable, human-like character that viewers can relate to. Charlotte Des Georges portrayal of Claire Cauvy is stellar as well. While her character is in a coma for most of the show's runtime, her presence is still strongly felt, and her moments with Gabriel during flashbacks or in his imagination are quite somber and impactful.
The series manages to portray small-town politics and their impact on the lives of ordinary people incredibly well. The characters are fleshed out, and their backstories, motivations, and feelings are explored with great care. The story grips the viewer from the beginning and, with each passing episode, the plot thickens, keeping the momentum of the story going.
The cinematography, music score, and overall production values are top-notch. The show's pacing is well-balanced, and each episode manages to end on a cliffhanger, making the viewer eagerly anticipate the next part.
To sum it up, L'Accident is an impeccably crafted crime thriller that will appeal to fans of the genre. Its well-constructed plot, great character work, and performances keep the viewer engaged throughout. With each new twist and turn, the show intensifies, making for a wonderful viewing experience that will leave the viewer wanting more with each episode.
