Kitchen Boss is a cooking show that follows the life of Buddy Valastro, a renowned chef and bakery owner. In season 2 episode 6, titled Soup & Sandwiches, viewers get a glimpse into some of Buddy's favorite recipes for classic comfort foods.
Buddy begins by explaining the importance of a good soup and sandwich combo, saying that it's the perfect meal for any time of day. He then proceeds to share his recipes for two types of sandwiches and two types of soups.
First up is the Italian-style grilled cheese sandwich. Buddy starts by making a homemade pesto sauce, which he spreads generously on slices of Italian bread. He then stacks slices of fresh mozzarella cheese, juicy tomatoes, and savory prosciutto between the slices of bread, and grills the sandwich until the cheese is melty and the bread is crispy. Buddy takes a bite and declares it a winner, saying that the flavors of the pesto, tomato, and prosciutto all blend perfectly together.
Next, Buddy prepares a classic steak and cheese sandwich. He starts by cooking thin slices of rib eye steak in a hot skillet with garlic and onions, and then adds slices of provolone cheese to the pan to melt. He then piles the steak and cheese mixture onto a hoagie roll, along with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Buddy takes a bite and says that it's one of his all-time favorite sandwiches, and that the key is to let the cheese get nice and melty to add extra flavor.
Moving on to soups, Buddy starts with a simple but hearty tomato soup. He explains that he likes to use San Marzano tomatoes for extra flavor, and starts by sautéing onions and garlic in a saucepan. He then adds the tomatoes, along with some chicken broth, salt, and pepper, and simmers the soup for about 15 minutes until the flavors have melded together. To finish the soup, Buddy adds a splash of cream and a sprinkle of fresh basil. He takes a taste and says that it's the perfect pairing for his Italian-style grilled cheese sandwich.
Finally, Buddy makes a classic chicken noodle soup. He starts by cooking bone-in chicken breasts in a pot of boiling water until they're cooked through. He then removes the chicken from the pot and shreds it with a fork. In the same pot, he adds carrots, celery, onions, and garlic, along with some chicken broth and egg noodles. He simmers the soup until the vegetables are tender and the noodles are cooked, and then adds the shredded chicken back into the pot. To finish the soup, Buddy adds a sprinkle of fresh parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice. He takes a taste and says that it's like a warm hug on a cold day.
Throughout the episode, Buddy also shares some handy cooking tips, such as how to get perfectly melted cheese on a sandwich and how to chop herbs quickly and efficiently. He also provides some helpful shortcuts, such as using store-bought chicken broth instead of making your own. By the end of the show, viewers are left with four delicious comfort food recipes that are perfect for any time of day.
