King Arthur and the Knights of Justice is an American animated television series produced by Golden Films, C&D and Bohbot Entertainment. The show aired from 1992 to 1994 in syndication and followed the adventures of a group of modern day football players who are transported back in time to Camelot to act as King Arthur and his knights.
The show featured a talented voice cast, including Kathleen Barr as Queen Guinevere, Michael Donovan as Arthur, Gary Chalk as Sir Bors, Andrew Kavadas as Sir Lancelot, Scott McNeil as Sir Kay, Jim Byrnes as Merlin, Mark Hildreth as Prince Valiant, and Teryl Rothery as Morgana.
The premise of the show revolves around King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table being imprisoned by the evil sorceress Morgana Le Fay in the Dark Ages. The only hope for Camelot is to summon a group of athletes from the future who have been prophesied to fulfill a quest to save the kingdom. Guided by the wizard Merlin, the football players are tasked with finding the twelve mystic keys that will unlock the portal to release Arthur and his knights from their imprisonment.
The players are given magical armor and transformed into knights, each with a unique power based on their position on the football team. Arthur becomes the leader of the group, and together they set out on a series of adventures, fighting Morgan's dark magic and searching for the keys to free the true knights of the round table.
Throughout the show, the knights battle Morgana's minions, including the brutish Lord Viper, who serves as Morgana's right-hand man. They also encounter other characters from Arthurian legend, including Sir Gawain and Prince Valiant.
The show was notable for its unique combination of the Arthurian legend with American football. The knights wore football-inspired armor, and their abilities were based on the positions they played on the team. For example, the quarterback's armor allowed him to throw energy bolts, while the defensive lineman's armor let him create earthquakes.
Despite its unique premise, King Arthur and the Knights of Justice was criticized for its lack of historical accuracy and its departure from the traditional Arthurian legend. Nevertheless, it gained a dedicated following during its run and has since become a cult classic.
The show also spawned a number of tie-in products, including a comic book series, video games, and action figures. It remains a beloved relic of 90s nostalgia and a fun, quirky take on the timeless legend of King Arthur.
King Arthur and the Knights of Justice is a series that ran for 2 seasons (26 episodes) between September 13, 1992 and on Syndicated
