Gina Scramuzza and Carlos Rodriguez were a couple that seemed to have it all in life. On the surface, they appeared to be a wholesome married couple, running a successful business together and raising a young daughter. But behind closed doors, their relationship was far from perfect.
In 2012, Gina and Carlos' marriage was on the rocks. Carlos had reportedly been unfaithful and Gina was struggling with depression. That's when the couple began discussing the idea of hiring a hitman to kill Carlos' mistress. They eventually found someone who was willing to commit the murder for $5,000.
On October 12, 2012, Gina and Carlos drove to a remote area near the Florida Everglades with their intended victim, 20-year-old Kristine Melton. While Gina distracted Kristine, Carlos shot her in the head. The couple then buried her body in a shallow grave.
However, the murder did not go unnoticed. Kristine's family reported her missing and police eventually connected her disappearance to Gina and Carlos. The couple was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
During their trials, both Gina and Carlos blamed each other for the murder. Gina claimed that Carlos had forced her into the plot, while Carlos claimed that Gina had been the mastermind. Despite their attempts to shift the blame, they were both found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
