Key & Peele is a sketch comedy series that has made a name for itself as one of the funniest shows on television. In the show's fifth season, the duo of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele continue to deliver hilarious sketches that poke fun at a variety of different topics.
In episode three of season five, titled "A Cappella Club," Key and Peele take on the world of collegiate a cappella groups. The episode begins with the pair attending a campus a cappella competition, where they are introduced to a number of different groups who are all vying for the top prize.
The first group that Key and Peele encounter is a group of nerdy white guys who perform a rendition of "We Will Rock You" that is full of awkward dance moves and clapping that is not even remotely in time. Next, they meet a group of black women who perform a soulful version of "Respect" that leaves the audience cheering. However, their performance is soon overshadowed by a group of Asians who perform a seamless rendition of "Eye of the Tiger" complete with martial arts moves that impress the crowd.
But the real showstopper is a group of white girls who perform a sultry version of "I Will Always Love You" that has the crowd screaming. The girls are dressed in tight black dresses that look like they were purchased at a strip club, and their suggestive dance moves leave very little to the imagination. Key and Peele are visibly uncomfortable during the performance, but the audience loves it.
After the competition, Key and Peele decide to start their own a cappella group. They name themselves "Nothin' But Smooth" and begin practicing in a dorm room. Their first performance is a disaster, with the guys singing off-key and forgetting their lyrics.
Undeterred, they continue practicing and soon improve. However, they quickly realize that they lack the requisite coolness to truly make it in the a cappella world. They attend a party held by the coolest a cappella group on campus, hoping to be invited to join. The party is full of beautiful girls, cool guys, and lots of alcohol. Key and Peele are clearly out of their element, and the other group members make no effort to include them.
Eventually, they sneak into the group's practice room and overhear them rehearsing for an upcoming competition. The other group members are clearly talented, but they lack passion and seem to be going through the motions. Key and Peele realize that they have something that the other group doesn't - a true love of music. Encouraged, they leave the practice room determined to win the competition with their passion and enthusiasm.
The day of the competition arrives, and Nothin' But Smooth takes the stage. Key and Peele are clearly nervous, but they give it their all. The audience is initially skeptical, but as the guys keep singing and dancing, the crowd starts to get on their feet. By the end of their performance, the entire audience is cheering and chanting their name.
In the end, Nothin' But Smooth wins the competition, much to the chagrin of the other groups. Key and Peele are ecstatic, but they realize that they don't need to be part of the a cappella club to enjoy singing and making music. They walk off into the sunset, singing and dancing the whole way.
Overall, "A Cappella Club" is a hilarious episode that skewers both the ridiculousness of collegiate a cappella culture and the desire to be cool and popular. Key and Peele are in top form, delivering pitch-perfect performances that will have audiences laughing until they cry.
