Kashimashi is an anime television series that premiered in 2006 on TV Tokyo. The show follows the story of a young boy named Tomari Kurusu and his two best friends, Hazumu Osaragi and Yasuna Kamiizumi. Tomari and Hazumu have been best friends since childhood, while Yasuna is a transfer student who quickly becomes close to the other two.
One day while on a walk, Hazumu confesses her feelings to Tomari, only to be rejected. Devastated, she flees into the nearby mountains and is struck by a falling spacecraft, killing her instantly. However, the aliens operating the spacecraft use their advanced technology to revive Hazumu, but in the process, they accidentally change her gender from male to female.
Upon returning to her friends and family, Hazumu has trouble adjusting to her new body and role in society. She finds comfort and support from both Tomari and Yasuna, who both develop romantic feelings for her despite her newfound gender.
Throughout the series, Hazumu navigates her relationships with Tomari and Yasuna while also dealing with the challenges of being transgender in a society that is not always accepting. Along the way, she also encounters other characters who are struggling with their own gender identities, leading to a deeper exploration of gender and sexuality.
Despite the heavy themes, Kashimashi has a light and often comedic tone, with moments of romance and drama sprinkled throughout. The characters are well-developed and their emotions feel genuine and relatable, making the viewer invested in their experiences. The animation is also top-notch, with bright and vivid colors and fluid movements.
Overall, Kashimashi is a heartwarming and thought-provoking series that tackles the themes of gender and sexuality with sensitivity and nuance. It is a must-watch for anyone wanting to explore these topics through the lens of an engaging and entertaining anime series.
