Raylan Givens is a US Marshal with a quick wit and a quicker draw, working in the heart of rural Kentucky in Justified season 3 episode 8. In the episode entitled "Watching the Detectives," Raylan finds himself at odds with a pair of detectives who have eyes on him for more than just a passing interest. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder continues his quest for power and prestige in the criminal underworld, and his thirst for revenge leads him to make a deal with the devil.
The episode opens with Raylan questioning a young woman about her brother's whereabouts. The brother, who goes by the name Tanner Dodd, is a person of interest in a recent robbery. The woman, Gretchen Swift, claims not to know where her brother is but seems to be hiding something. Raylan presses her for information but gets nowhere.
Meanwhile, a pair of detectives, Colt and Newton, are watching Raylan's every move. They are convinced that he is up to something and are determined to catch him in the act. Raylan is aware of their presence but chooses to ignore them, much to their frustration.
Boyd Crowder, the charismatic criminal mastermind, is still trying to make a name for himself in Harlan County. He has his sights set on the lucrative oxycontin trade and is working with a pharmacist, Ellstin Limehouse, to make it happen. However, Boyd is not content to let Limehouse call the shots and insists on taking a more active role in the operation.
In a tense confrontation, Limehouse tells Boyd that he will not tolerate any interference and warns him that he will not hesitate to use his considerable power to squash any threats to his operation. Boyd understands the danger but remains determined to ensure that he comes out on top.
As the episode progresses, Raylan finds himself in hot water when a witness comes forward to implicate him in a crime. Colt and Newton are quick to pounce and arrest Raylan, convinced that they have finally caught him in the act. Raylan denies the accusations, but the evidence against him is damning.
Meanwhile, Boyd has struck a deal with a dangerous criminal named Wynn Duffy. Duffy is a ruthless enforcer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. In exchange for his help, Boyd promises to kill an associate of Duffy's who has been causing him trouble.
But as Boyd prepares to carry out the hit, he realizes that he may have bitten off more than he can chew. The target, a man named Derrick, is a former Special Forces operative who is more than capable of defending himself. Boyd is forced to improvise when things don't go according to plan, leading to a tense showdown between the two men.
In the end, Raylan is able to clear his name and is released from custody. He confronts the detectives, who admit that they were wrong about him all along. Boyd, meanwhile, realizes that he may have made a mistake in taking on Derrick and begins to question his own motivations.
