In Justified season 3 episode 2 titled "Cut Ties," Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens and his ex-wife Winona Hawkins attend a baby fair in Lexington, Kentucky. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder tries to move his oxycodone operation out of Harlan County and into the city.
As Raylan and Winona browse the baby fair, they encounter a pregnant woman named Lindsey who claims her ex-boyfriend is stalking her. Raylan takes her statement and promises to look into it later. However, when Lindsey's ex is found dead later that day, Raylan finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation.
Boyd, on the other hand, is busy trying to secure a new oxycodone pipeline into Lexington. He enlists the help of two local drug dealers, but they prove to be less than reliable when they try to cheat him out of his cut. Boyd takes matters into his own hands and shows them who's boss, but not without consequences.
As the investigation into Lindsey's ex-boyfriend's death heats up, Raylan finds himself at odds with his boss, Art Mullen, and the Lexington Police Department. The case becomes more complicated when Lindsey's ex is revealed to be connected to a dangerous street gang, and Raylan must navigate the dangerous waters of gang politics to solve the case.
Meanwhile, Boyd's plans for moving his drug operation into Lexington take a hit when a local businessman puts pressure on him to leave town. Boyd realizes that the only way to win the businessman over is to provide him with a valuable service, but doing so requires him to make some dangerous alliances.
As the episode comes to a close, Raylan and Boyd find themselves on opposite sides of the law yet again, each working to further their own interests in a dangerous and unpredictable world. "Cut Ties" sets the stage for an action-packed season full of twists and turns, as Raylan and Boyd do whatever it takes to achieve their goals.
