Back in the Justice League season 2, episode 6, named "Only a Dream (2)", the villains are all out to get the Justice League. Using previously unseen technology, the adversaries have concocted a method of attacking and weakening the heroes even as they sleep. This means that their dreams become the battleground, and the line between what is real and what is imagined begins to blur.
As the episode opens, we find the Justice League members all writhing in pain and misery, each seemingly locked in their own horrific nightmare, while the evil Dr. Destiny cackles in the background at his handiwork. The good guys are all struggling to fight back against the terrors of their inner mindscape, but this is something they have never experienced before.
The story then starts to focus on the brave and loyal Wonder Woman, whom we see battling against the demon-like creature who appears to have taken over her subconscious. However, as she struggles to overpower the demon, we see her thoughts turn back to her homeland and the people who depend on her there. Suddenly, the demon vanishes, and she is able to return to the fight. At that point, we realize that the strength to triumph over these fears and terrors comes from within as a result of something greater than oneself.
Soon, the action shifts to Superman, who also finds himself caught up in a world of nightmares. Here, he faces a warped version of himself born out of his insecurities and doubts. But we can see that Clark is still trying to fight back, despite being trapped in his own mind. Eventually, he is able to sense that his struggles are not real, that he’s merely dreaming, which gives him the impetus to break free from the and the nightmare’s grip.
Meanwhile, the other members of the Justice League - Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Flash - all struggle against their own personal demons as they too try to fight back against the villains. But just as it seems their efforts to reclaim their minds might prove futile, Batman mysteriously appears within the dreamscape, working quickly to assemble a plan for liberation from the dreamworld.
Ultimately, the solution to save the Justice League comes from seeing into the mind of one of their own. We find out that the Martian Manhunter, known for his incredible psychic abilities, is using his telepathy to investigate the dream realm. He reports to Batman an intriguing discovery, one that might save the team. Using this new knowledge, the Dark Knight works quickly to put his plan into action and arms the team with the weapons and strategies they'll need to fight back against their foes.
As the episode reaches its climax, the Justice League fights their way out of this dimensional minefield against their overpowering demon-like monsters. Despite the odds stacked against them, the good guys find that they are able to overcome their foes in a flurry of punches, kicks, and other impressive techniques. As the final battle ends, the League wakes up from their dream, all dazed and disoriented, not sure if they have really just been trapped in their dream or if they have woken up from a nightmare. This episode serves as a cautionary tale of how quickly our minds - our safe places - can be swayed by fears and doubts. But no matter what the challenge, the strength to overcome them always lie within.
