The Junji Ito Collection is a horror anime series adapted from the works of renowned Japanese horror manga artist Junji Ito. In season 1 episode 10, viewers are treated to two short stories: "Greased" and "Bridge."
In "Greased," a boy named Toshio lives alone with his mother after his father's death. His mother constantly applies a strange, oily substance to her skin, claiming it's a miracle cure for all ailments. As Toshio begins to notice odd changes in his mother's behavior, he starts to suspect that the grease may be causing something more sinister. Meanwhile, a mysterious man appears in town, claiming to have the solution to all of Toshio's problems.
The second story, "Bridge," follows a group of high school students who decide to investigate the mysterious suicide of a fellow student on a nearby bridge. The bridge is currently under construction and surrounded by scaffolding, adding to the eerie atmosphere. As they delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the suicide, the students start to experience strange and terrifying supernatural phenomena.
Both stories are gorgeously animated and expertly adapted from Ito's original manga, staying true to his unique blend of horror and surrealism. The first story, "Greased," is particularly effective at ramping up tension and creating a sense of unease, with an unsettling climax that will leave viewers on edge. Meanwhile, the second story, "Bridge," is a more traditional ghost story, with plenty of scares and a tense, atmospheric build-up.
As with all episodes of The Junji Ito Collection, viewers can expect stunning visuals, nuanced storytelling, and plenty of spine-chilling horror. Whether you're a fan of Japanese horror manga or just love a good scare, this episode is a must-watch.
