Julie and the Phantoms follows Julie, a high school student and aspiring musician who has lost her passion for music since the death of her mother. In season 1 episode 1, titled "Wake Up", Julie is struggling to move on from her mother's death and blames herself for not being able to save her. Her father, Ray, is concerned about her well-being and wants her to join the school's music program to help her cope but Julie is hesitant.
After days of ignoring her father's requests, Julie decides to clean her mother's old studio and finds her mother's old guitar. As she starts to play it, a mysterious band, "The Phantoms", suddenly appear in her room and begin playing along with her. Julie is initially scared but quickly realizes that the band, composed of three teenage boys - Luke, Alex, and Reggie - are ghosts who had died in 1995 and have been summoned back to the world of the living through music.
Julie and the Phantoms start to jam and the boys notice Julie's talent and suggest they form a band together. Julie is hesitant but her passion for music is reignited as she sees her mother's ghost encouraging her to pursue her dreams.
Meanwhile, Alex, one of the ghosts, tries to communicate with his living parents but is unsuccessful as their grief and sadness over his death has prevented them from moving on. The other ghosts encourage Alex to focus on the present and help Julie with her music. Feeling a new sense of purpose, the ghosts decide to help Julie enter a music competition at school.
The episode ends with Julie performing at the school's music competition with the Phantoms. They capture the audience's attention and leave them wanting more. Julie finally realizes that music is her true passion and that she can use it to cope with her mother's death.
Overall, "Wake Up" sets the tone for the rest of the season by introducing the main characters and establishing their motivations. It is a heartwarming episode about finding your passion and using it to overcome grief. The music is catchy, the characters are charming, and the premise is unique. It's a great start to what promises to be an entertaining and emotional season.
