Juana Ines is an exciting Mexican historical drama series set in the 17th century, showcasing the life of Juana Ines de la Cruz, an intelligent young woman who defied gender-based limitations to become a renowned writer, scholar, and nun.

In season 1 episode 2 titled "There Is No Confinement," we see Juana Ines struggling with the restrictions placed upon her as a woman in her time. The episode opens with Juana Ines scribbling away by candlelight in the dead of night, yearning to expand her knowledge but facing the roadblock of societal expectations. Her desire to learn leads her to seek out the Viceroy's library, which is forbidden to women.

After being caught by the library's keeper, Juana Ines forms a bond with Sister Filotea (played by Lisa Owen), a feminist figure who champions women's right to education and chafes at the sexism in her own religious order. Their correspondence sparks a spirited debate over the role of women in society, with Sister Filotea encouraging Juana Ines to use her talents to uplift her gender, and Juana Ines resisting becoming a mere symbol.

Meanwhile, Juana Ines's brother Antonio (played by Carlos Valencia) is becoming impatient with her prolonged absence from their hometown, thinking of her as a burden and a liability despite her intelligence. He goes so far as to involve a dowry-hungry suitor to try and convince Juana Ines to marry and "settle down." This furthers her desire to escape the confines of her gender and family, even as it breaks her heart to feel unwanted by her own kin.

The episode's climactic scene features Juana Ines boldly confronting the Bishop in her quest to seek permission to read and write freely. Her bravery lands her in even bigger trouble, as the close-minded Bishop threatens to excommunicate her and invokes the Spanish Inquisition in response to Juana Ines's intellectual curiosity and independent thinking.

Within just one episode, Juana Ines has already established itself as an engaging, thought-provoking period drama that explores themes of gender, intellectual freedom, and the intersection of religion and politics. Juana Ines's courage and determination in the face of oppression are admirable, and the supporting cast of characters provide a rich tapestry of viewpoints and perspectives. Episode 2 leaves the viewer eagerly anticipating what challenges and triumphs await Juana Ines in the future.
