"Jewel in the Palace" is a Korean historical drama that follows the life of Jang-Geum, a woman who enters the palace and becomes the first female royal physician during the Joseon Dynasty. The first episode of the series sets the stage for the story to come, introducing the audience to Jang-Geum and some of the other main characters.

The episode opens with a young Jang-Geum living with her mother in a small village. We quickly learn that Jang-Geum is determined and passionate, with dreams of becoming a doctor. However, the other physicians are hesitant to even consider the idea. They argue that tradition forbids women from becoming doctors and that the very idea is ludicrous. Despite this opposition, one physician, Dr. Jung, is intrigued by the idea and sets out to find a suitable female candidate.

It is at this point that we see Jang-Geum again, as Dr. Jung arrives in her village to search for prospective female physicians. Jang-Geum's quick mind and passion for medicine immediately catch Dr. Jung's attention. He tests her knowledge of acupuncture and other medical practices, and is impressed with her skill and intelligence.

Encouraged by Dr. Jung's praise, Jang-Geum decides to apply for the position of royal physician. Her mother is still against the idea, insisting that Jang-Geum will never be accepted into the palace as a woman. However, Jang-Geum is undeterred and sets off for the palace alone, determined to prove her worth and fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor.

Upon arriving at the palace, Jang-Geum faces several challenges. She is mocked and belittled by the other physicians, who are all men, and is denied even the most basic opportunities to prove her knowledge and skills. However, Jang-Geum remains steadfast in her determination and refuses to give up.

In the final scene of the episode, Jang-Geum is given a chance to prove herself when the King becomes seriously ill. None of the male physicians are able to diagnose his condition, but Jang-Geum is able to identify it as smallpox and saves the King's life with her expertise.

Overall, the first episode of "Jewel in the Palace" is an engaging introduction to the series. It sets up the story and characters well, and leaves the audience intrigued to see what trials and triumphs lie ahead for Jang-Geum in the palace.
