Set in India during the final days of British rule, Jewel in the Crown is a mesmerizing drama series that explores the complexities of colonialism, culture clash, and personal identity. In season 1 episode 1, titled "Crossing The River," we follow the story of Daphne Manners (Susan Wooldridge), a young woman who arrives in India to live with her aunt and uncle. Unfamiliar with the customs and traditions of the country, Daphne struggles to find her place in the British society that has taken over India.

As the episode opens, we see Daphne's uncle Edward (Tim Pigott-Smith) and his wife come to the train station to welcome her. They are accompanied by a Sikh driver named Hari Kumar (Art Malik), who has been sent to pick up Daphne and take her to her new home. From the very beginning, it's clear that there is tension between the British and the Indian characters. Edward tries to establish his authority over Hari, who appears resentful and resistant.

We soon learn that there has been unrest in the region, with rumors of an anti-British rebellion brewing. Daphne's uncle, who works for the British administration, is worried about the safety of his family and other white residents. He advises Daphne to stay indoors and avoid any interaction with Indians who might be hostile.

In spite of Edward's warnings, Daphne is determined to explore the city and see what India has to offer. She befriends an Englishman named Ronald Merrick (Timothy Bentinck), who is a member of the police force. Merrick is arrogant and condescending towards Daphne, but she is too naive to see his true nature. He takes her out for a ride and shows her some of the sights, including the local market and the countryside.

Meanwhile, we are introduced to two other important characters: Ronald's superior officer, Colonel Barney Gibbs (Peter Egan), and an Indian doctor named Hari Prasad (Art Malik, in a dual role). Gibbs is a stern and uncompromising man who is obsessed with maintaining order and discipline. He doesn't trust the natives and is always on the lookout for signs of rebellion. Hari Prasad, on the other hand, is a compassionate and progressive doctor who cares deeply about his patients. He is also a friend of Hari Kumar, the Sikh driver who picked up Daphne.

As the episode progresses, we see the various characters crossing paths and influencing each other's lives. Daphne is drawn to Hari Kumar, who represents a different culture and way of life. Hari Prasad tries to heal the wounds caused by colonialism, while Gibbs and Merrick are intent on maintaining the status quo. In the midst of all this, a tragedy occurs that sets off a chain of events that will have far-reaching consequences.

Overall, "Crossing The River" is a gripping and thought-provoking opening episode that sets the tone for the rest of the series. The themes of identity, power, and prejudice are explored in a nuanced and complex way, and the acting is top-notch. As Daphne and the other characters navigate the treacherous waters of colonial India, we are left with a sense of unease and uncertainty about what the future holds for them.
