Jane is a young woman who has always lived a well-ordered life. She's a virgin and has never really been interested in dating, preferring to focus on her studies and her family. However, all of that changes when she is accidentally artificially inseminated during a routine visit to her doctor.
As a result of this unexpected turn of events, Jane finds herself pregnant and unsure of what to do. To complicate matters even further, the biological father of her child happens to be Rafael, a man she had a brief fling with years ago.
In Chapter Twenty, the twentieth episode of the first season of Jane the Virgin, Jane is dealing with the aftermath of Michael's shooting. Michael was shot while trying to apprehend Sin Rostro, and Jane is understandably distraught. She's spent much of her time at the hospital, fretting over Michael's condition and hoping for the best.
Meanwhile, Rafael is grappling with his own set of problems. He's recently discovered that his mother, Elena, has been embezzling money from the Marbella hotel. As if that weren't enough, he's also dealing with the fallout from his brief romance with Petra, one of the hotel's employees.
As Jane and Rafael navigate their respective issues, they find themselves growing closer to one another. Rafael is still coming to terms with his feelings for Jane, and Jane is fascinated by Rafael's complicated life and his connection to her unborn child.
Elsewhere, Xiomara, Jane's mother, finds herself falling for Rogelio, a telenovela star who is Jane's father. Xiomara has always been a bit of a free spirit, but she's surprised by the intensity of her feelings for Rogelio.
Overall, Chapter Twenty is an emotional and intense episode that sees Jane and Rafael facing some major challenges. Despite everything that they've been through, though, they both remain determined to make the best of their situation and to be there for one another as much as possible.
