Jamaica Inn is a period drama mini-series produced by BBC One. The three-part adaptation of the 1936 novel by Daphne du Maurier follows the story of Mary Yellan (Jessica Brown Findlay), a young woman who moves to the remote and isolated Jamaica Inn in Cornwall to live with her aunt and uncle following the death of her mother.

The Inn, once a bustling smugglers' inn, is now a shadow of its former self. It is in a state of disrepair, and the surrounding area is plagued by mist and mystery. Mary quickly realizes that her uncle Joss Merlyn (Sean Harris) is the leader of the local smuggling ring, and that the inn is used as a base for their covert operations.

Mary finds herself drawn into the dangerous world of smuggling, which is fraught with danger and violence. She also discovers that her uncle is not the only member of the family who is part of the criminal fraternity. Her aunt Patience (Joanne Whalley) is also involved in the activities, and Mary finds herself struggling to understand why her kind-hearted aunt is complicit in such illegal activities.

Meanwhile, Mary meets Jem Merlyn (Matthew McNulty), Joss's younger brother, who is also involved in the smuggling ring, but has a kinder heart than his brother. Mary is drawn to him, which puts her in more danger, as Joss is fiercely jealous of his brother and has threatened to kill him.

As Mary becomes more embroiled in the world of smuggling, she starts to unravel the secrets and lies surrounding her family, discovering the truth about the death of her mother and the role her family played in it. The series becomes a race against time, as Mary tries to expose the smuggling ring before she meets the same fate as her mother.

The mini-series is set in the early 19th century and offers a dark and atmospheric portrayal of rural Cornish life. The bleak, windswept landscapes and desolate moors serve as a backdrop for the complex and sometimes violent relationships between the characters. The mystery and suspense of the original novel are transferred to the screen, making for an intriguing and engaging viewing experience.

The performances of the cast members are excellent, with Jessica Brown Findlay bringing a mixture of strength and vulnerability to the role of Mary. Sean Harris is perfectly cast as the brutish Joss, creating a character who is both repulsive and captivating. Joanne Whalley is excellent as the fragile Patience, portraying a woman who is trapped in a situation she cannot escape.

Matthew McNulty gives a nuanced performance as Jem, whose inner conflict between loyalty to his family and his own moral code is expertly portrayed. The chemistry between Brown Findlay and McNulty is undeniable, making the romantic aspect of the story all the more engaging.

Overall, Jamaica Inn is an excellent mini-series, which expertly captures the intense atmosphere of Daphne du Maurier's novel. The production values are high, and the pacing of the story is expertly handled, keeping the tension high throughout. The attention to detail in the costumes and set design is also impressive, making the viewer feel like they have stepped back in time. If you enjoy historical dramas with a mystery and suspenseful edge, Jamaica Inn is definitely worth a watch.
