The Mission (1) is the sixteenth episode of the seventh season of the American military drama JAG. The episode first aired on CBS on February 26, 2002.
The episode begins with Captain Harmon Rabb Jr. (David James Elliott) and his partner Lieutenant commander Caitlin Pike (Andrea Parker) at a clandestine CIA meeting. The CIA has tasked Rabb with transporting a defector, Yuri Kustov, from Moscow to the United States. Kustov is a Russian scientist who is willing to share critical information with the United States.
Things don't go quite as planned, however, as Rabb and Pike are ambushed by Russian military forces upon their arrival in Moscow. Pike is killed in the attack, and Rabb is gravely injured.
Back in the United States, Admiral A.J. Chegwidden (John M. Jackson) is informed of Rabb's situation and quickly mobilizes a team to rescue him. Chegwidden enlists the help of Jennifer Coates (Zoe McLellan) to track down Rabb's ex-girlfriend, Lieutenant Loren Singer (Nanci Chambers). Singer is now working as a CIA operative and has access to valuable intelligence that can aid in Rabb's rescue.
Meanwhile, Rabb is being held captive in Russia. He is interrogated by the FSB, Russia's intelligence agency, but refuses to divulge any information. After several failed rescue attempts by the U.S. military, Rabb is resigned to the fact that he may never make it home.
As the episode comes to a close, Chegwidden receives intel that the Russian defector has been compromised, and the CIA needs to act quickly to extract him. Chegwidden realizes that this may be the opportunity they need to get Rabb out of Russia.
Overall, The Mission (1) is a suspenseful and action-packed episode that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The episode sets up a nail-biting cliffhanger that leaves fans eagerly anticipating the next installment.
