In JAG Season 4 Episode 7 titled "Angels 30", viewers are taken on a thrilling journey that starts with a military training exercise turning deadly. The episode delves into the theme of brotherhood and the fine line between loyalty and betrayal.
The episode begins with an intense training exercise where a fighter jet manned by a father and son duo, Lt. Col. Steve Brumby and Ensign Jason Brumby, respectively, is involved in a mid-air collision. Although they were able to eject out of their aircraft, Steve is left unconscious and hanging from a tree while Jason lands a few miles away.
Meanwhile, the Navy's Judge Advocate General's (JAG) office is in full swing. Harm and Jennifer are busy working on a case when they receive a call from the Admiral, who tells them about the incident. Harm is ordered to go to the location of the crash to investigate since the father and son duo belongs to his former squadron. Before leaving, Harm tells Jennifer to look into the events leading up to the crash to determine if there's any foul play.
When Harm arrives at the crash site, he finds Steve still hanging from the tree. After cutting him down, they both head into the woods in search of Jason. While searching, Harm comes across another pilot named Lt. Mitch Webb. Webb tells Harm that he saw a shadow of another plane just before the collision and when he looked up, he saw another plane heading towards them at a high speed. This information leads Harm to suspect that the Brumbys' crash may not have been an accident.
Simultaneously, Jennifer is trying to find out any information relating to the Brumby family and the squadron. She comes across a series of anonymous emails alleging that Steve was neglecting his duties in the squadron and was flying drunk. She shares this information with Bud, who is also working on the case.
The investigation turns personal for Harm when he discovers that Brumby was a close friend and mentor. As he delves deeper into the case, he begins to realise that the family dynamics within the Brumby family are far more complex than he'd initially thought. Meanwhile, the suspect list becomes longer when a flight instructor and a mechanic are also found to have had reasons to target Steve.
With the investigations taking a toll on Harm, he is forced to confront his demons from his time in the squadron, which includes his own fatherly relationship with Brumby.
As the case unfolds, the audience is taken on a ride that is filled with twists and turns. One of the highlights of the episode is the reintroduction of the character of Meg, Harm's former girlfriend. It is, so far, one of the most gripping episodes in the series, showcasing the writers' skill of storytelling and great character arcs.
