iZombie is an American television series that premiered on The CW in 2015 and ended in 2019. The show was created by Rob Thomas and was based on the comic book series of the same name, written by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred. The show stars Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, and David Anders.
The show follows the story of Olivia "Liv" Moore, a medical resident who is turned into a zombie after attending a boat party that turned into a zombie feeding frenzy. Liv tries to adjust to her new life as a zombie and hides her condition from her family and friends. She takes a job at the morgue to have access to brains, which she needs to consume regularly to avoid becoming a mindless zombie.
Liv quickly discovers that consuming the brains of the dead gives her flashes of their memories and skills. She uses this ability to help solve homicide cases with the help of medical examiner, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, and detective Clive Babineaux. Liv's insights into the minds of murder victims allows her to see their killer's point of view, helping Clive to solve cases he might have missed otherwise.
Throughout the series, Liv consumes the brains of various individuals, each with their own unique personalities and abilities. This leads to some hilarious moments when Liv takes on the personalities of those whose brains she has consumed. The show is a blend of comedy, drama, and horror, and it works brilliantly.
As the series progresses, Liv discovers that there are others like her, including a zombie named Blaine DeBeers, who heads a brain-selling racket. Liv and Blaine have a complicated relationship throughout the series, as they share a love-hate relationship, with moments of both trust and betrayal.
One of the show's core themes is "us vs them." Zombies are outcasts in society, and they struggle to integrate into everyday life. Throughout the series, we see the prejudices and the fear toward zombies. The show tackles serious topics such as prejudice and social inequality cleverly and delicately, making it more than just a simple horror-comedy.
Another strength of the series is its outstanding cast. Rose McIver, in particular, is fantastic as Liv. She captures the complex nature of Liv's character, from trying to keep her zombie nature a secret to coming to terms with her new identity. Rahul Kohli is perfect as Ravi; his personality complements Liv's quirky nature, providing both comedic and emotional moments on the show. Malcolm Goodwin and Robert Buckley also shine as Clive and Major, respectively.
The show's music is another highlight, with an excellent soundtrack that complements the tone of the show. The cinematography and direction are also excellent, with some beautifully shot scenes throughout the series.
Overall, iZombie is a fantastic show that combines horror, comedy, and drama with excellent writing and standout performances from its cast. The show deals with serious themes while maintaining a lighthearted tone, making it an enjoyable watch for any fan of the genre. Its unique blend of genres and characters make it unlike anything else on TV, and it's definitely worth watching.
