In It's Me or the Dog season 1 episode 10, titled "Boys vs. Girls," host Victoria Stilwell takes on the challenge of a blended family struggling with their two untrained dogs. The family consists of a mother, her three daughters, and a father with two sons. The parents have recently married and moved in together, but their dogs, a female Yorkshire Terrier named Toffee and a male Miniature Schnauzer named Treacle, are not getting along and causing chaos in the household.
Victoria starts by observing the family's interactions with their dogs and quickly notices that the adults are not taking responsibility for their pets' behavior. The children are also inconsistently enforcing the rules, leading to confusion for the dogs and lack of respect for their owners. Toffee, in particular, has become aggressive towards Treacle and is constantly growling and biting him. The tension between the two is so high that they cannot be in the same room together without fighting.
Victoria decides to separate the dogs and work with each family separately. She starts with the girls and teaches them proper training techniques and how to establish dominance. She emphasizes the importance of consistency and making sure everyone in the household is using the same commands and techniques. The girls quickly take to the training and start to see improvements in Toffee's behavior.
Next, Victoria works with the boys and focuses on Treacle's issues. She teaches them how to properly socialize a dog and how to address his fear of other dogs. With patience and persistence, the boys make progress with Treacle and start to gain his trust.
Finally, Victoria brings the families back together and starts to reintroduce the dogs. She shows them how to properly introduce dogs and how to monitor their behavior to prevent fights. The families practice these techniques and are happy to see Toffee and Treacle finally getting along.
Throughout the episode, Victoria emphasizes the importance of responsible pet ownership and making sure everyone in the household is on the same page. She also stresses the need for patience and consistency when training a dog. By the end of the episode, the families have learned valuable lessons and are able to enjoy their pets without the chaos and stress that previously plagued their household.
