As the first episode of Invincible, "It's About Time" sets the stage for an action-packed superhero excursion filled with tension, drama, and humor. The episode introduces the audience to Mark Grayson, a typical teenager with aspirations of becoming a superhero just like his father, Nolan Grayson - also known as the invincible Omni-Man. His father has super strength and the ability to fly, and Mark, like any loving son, is proud of his dad.
The first episode details Mark's training and the lessons his father teaches him about being a hero. As Mark becomes more skilled with his powers, he is finally able to fly for the first time, leading him to realize the sheer magnitude and scale of what it means to have superhuman abilities.
The story takes an interesting turn as he first tries to save a stranded tourist. Once there is no one else around, Mark's world is abruptly turned upside down when he realizes the true nature of his father's work and that Omni-Man is a member of the elite superhero group, the Guardians of the Globe.
As the episode continues, we learn of the impending threat that could destroy the world and all life as we know it. Unable to prepare themselves for the upcoming battle, a group of alien warlords, known and feared as the Flaxans, land on earth with a warplane, launching a devastating attack on the city.
The police are left defenseless, with no ordinary person capable of stopping the aliens. It's up to Mark to step into his role as a superhero and use his abilities to protect the citizens from harm.
Mark is forced into taking a vital role in this mission as his father is away and unable to aid. Mark, in his inexperience, tries to stand up to them alone but is swiftly overpowered by the invaders. However, his tenacity and determination allow him to bounce back from each setback, and the audience is treated to a beautiful display of creativity as Mark uses his powers in new, surprising ways, displaying bravery and ingenuity in the process.
As the episode concludes, we find Mark lying wounded and battered from the pounding he withstood while fighting the Flaxans. His father, somewhat nonchalantly showing up to help his injured son, tries to offer comfort and support. Mark is not happy with the situation as he has seen disappointment in his father's face when he struggles. His father consoles him and tells him that maybe this was not meant to be. Nevertheless, the end of the episode leaves the audience with the ultimate cliffhanger.
Overall, "It's About Time" is a masterful opening episode that grips the audience with intense action, family drama, and humor in equal measure. The storyline promises to be an exceptional exploration of the superhero genre, with a deep and abiding respect for the source material. It offers an imaginative and engaging insight into the life of a new superhero on the block, full of the kind of surprises that keep viewers coming back for more.
