Inuyasha season 2 episode 22, titled "Kohaku," centers around the character of the same name. Kohaku is a young boy who has been completely brainwashed by the enemy. He is sent to infiltrate the group of protagonists, led by Inuyasha, in order to carry out their orders to kill them all. This episode begins with Kohaku being given his assignment.
As Kohaku approaches the group, he is immediately met with distrust. The main characters have already had encounters with the enemy before and are not willing to let their guard down around anyone from that side. However, after a few moments of explanation, Kohaku is able to convince them of his innocent intentions and they include him in their group.
Throughout the episode, Kohaku struggles with his mission. He knows that he must carry out the orders given to him, but he has also formed a bond with the group and does not want to hurt them. Flashbacks are shown of Kohaku's past, revealing how he was taken prisoner by the enemy and tortured until he lost all of his memories. He is completely unaware of who he used to be before he was brainwashed.
As the group travels together, they are attacked by a group of demons. Kohaku reveals that he can fight and helps to defeat the demons. This action causes Inuyasha and the rest of the group to start doubting their suspicions about him. They begin to trust him more and include him in their battles.
During a break in their journey, Kohaku disappears. Panicked, the group searches for him and finds him in the clutches of the enemy. He had been taken away by them and was being tortured again. The group fights their way through the enemy's stronghold and rescues Kohaku. However, it is too late. Kohaku has been rebrainwashed and has once again lost all of his memories.
The episode ends with Kohaku being returned to the enemy's side, ready to continue carrying out their orders. Inuyasha and the rest of the group are left feeling defeated and saddened by the loss of a potential ally.
Overall, this episode serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the cost of war. Kohaku is just a young boy who has been taken away from his family, tortured, and brainwashed into doing the enemy's bidding. He does not deserve to suffer like this, and the main characters feel a sense of guilt for not being able to save him. This episode raises important questions about the nature of war and how it affects the innocent.
