In Divine Proportion is the first episode of season 4 of the Inspector Lynley Mysteries television series. The show is a British crime drama based on the novels of Elizabeth George and follows the investigations of Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers.
The episode begins with Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) attending the funeral of a childhood friend, Roberta (Lucy Brooks). During the service, he becomes suspicious when her husband, Michael (James Laurenson), seems overly calm and made inappropriate comments. Later, Lynley is approached by Michael who reveals that Roberta had been having an affair with her art teacher, Julian Britton (Tom Goodman-Hill), who he believes may have been responsible for her death.
Lynley and Havers (Sharon Small) begin their investigation into Roberta's death and soon discover that she had been working on a project with Julian. The duo visits Julian's studio and find evidence that he had been involved with Roberta. However, when they question him, Julian denies any involvement in her death.
The investigation takes an unexpected turn when Lynley's boss, Superintendent Webberly (Simon Williams), informs him that Roberta's death is now being treated as a suicide. Lynley is not convinced by this and is determined to find out the truth. Meanwhile, Havers becomes increasingly concerned about Lynley's emotional involvement in the case.
As they continue their investigation, Lynley and Havers discover that Roberta had been suffering from depression and had been taking medication which had been prescribed by a psychiatrist, Dr. Ashley Keenan (Emma Fielding). They also find out that Michael had been aware of Roberta's mental health issues, but had failed to seek any medical help for her.
Lynley and Havers confront Dr. Keenan, who admits that she had been seeing Roberta but denies any wrongdoing. They also question Michael again and discover that he had been having financial difficulties, and that Roberta had been planning to leave him for Julian.
The duo's investigation leads them to a surprising conclusion about the true cause of Roberta's death.
In Divine Proportion is an engaging and thoughtful episode that explores themes of mental health and the impact of emotional trauma. It also delves into the complex relationships between friends, spouses, and lovers, and the lengths that people will go to protect themselves and those they care about. The performances by Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small are excellent, and the story is engaging and well-paced. Overall, this episode is a strong start to the fourth season of Inspector Lynley Mysteries.
