After a successful third season, Inside the Ambulance returns with its fourth season and the second episode named Just in Time. This episode follows the paramedics of the West Midlands Ambulance Service as they tackle a range of medical emergencies, from minor to critical, but each requiring their prompt and skilled assistance.
The episode opens with ambulance crew Nick and Steph arriving at a 30-year-old’s house, who’s been experiencing severe stomach pain. The patient is in agony, and the crew notes that she has an extremely high heart rate and shallow breathing. They suspect that she may have appendicitis and quickly transport her to the hospital for further examination. The patient is in excruciating pain, but Nick and Steph work fast and do their best to keep her comfortable.
The show then moves on to the second scene, where paramedics Chelsie and Darren are dispatched to attend to a two-year-old baby who has accidentally ingested an asthma inhaler. The parents are in a state of shock and don’t know what to do. The child appears to be unaffected, but this could quickly change, and even a small dosage could lead to severe consequences. Chelsie and Darren swiftly take over the treatment and assess the child's vitals before taking him to the hospital for further observation.
The third scene follows the debut of a new ambulance crew member, student paramedic Cee-Jay. He's out on his first shift, and his mentor is longtime paramedic Dal. They're responding to a call from a woman with breathing difficulties. The patient is a smoker, and as Dal and Cee-Jay help her, they discover that her oxygen level is dangerously low. The patient requires immediate medical attention, and the ambulance quickly races to the hospital where the woman receives the necessary treatment.
Episode 2 also shows a couple of scenes where the ambulance teams help people who have collapsed in public places. In one instance, Nick and Steph arrive at a busy shopping center to assist an elderly woman who has fainted. They settle her, check her vitals, and quickly get her into the ambulance to take her to the hospital. In another scene, the crew of Chelsie and Darren attend to an inebriated man lying on the footpath. The man is disoriented and unresponsive, and the paramedics suspect that he may have ingested more than just alcohol.
The final scene of the episode takes place in a suburb where a woman has been hit by a car. The call comes through, and ambulance crew members Dal and Cee-Jay rush to the scene. The woman is lying on the side of the road, and her condition is critical, requiring immediate medical attention. Dal and Cee-Jay swiftly assess the situation and get to work as quickly as possible to stabilize the woman's condition before transporting her to the hospital.
Just in Time, the second episode of season four of Inside the Ambulance offers viewers a fascinating insight into the work of frontline paramedics. It emphasizes their vital and professional role as they respond to a range of emergencies, from minor to severe and often life-threatening scenarios. The show provides a great depiction of the pre-hospital care provided by these healthcare professionals with an emphasis on compassion, bravery, and dedication.
