Inside Job season 1 episode 1, titled "Unpresidented," is a satirical take on the United States presidential election. The episode centers on a fictional candidate named Richard Spade (voiced by Christian Slater), who is running for president on a platform of "Making America Great Again, But Better."
Spade is a wealthy businessman with no political experience, but he manages to win the Republican nomination through a combination of populist rhetoric and shady dealings with the help of his campaign manager, Brett Hand (voiced by Clark Duke). The main character, Cognito Smith an Ivy League-educated government agent working for the shadowy corporation known as Cognito Inc., is tasked with ensuring that Spade wins the election by any means necessary.
The episode begins with a hilarious newsreel of Spade's campaign announcement, in which he boasts that he's "never lost at anything" and promises to "drain the swamp in Washington." Meanwhile, Cognito Smith is awakened by his robot butler Tumi (voiced by Lizzie Caplan) and briefed by his boss, Jack (voiced by John DiMaggio), on the importance of Spade's victory.
Throughout the episode, Cognito pulls strings behind the scenes to make sure that Spade wins, manipulating the media, suppressing voter turnout, and even hacking the voting machines themselves. He also has to deal with the rival campaign of Spade's Democratic opponent, Cindy Sargent (voiced by Lizzy Caplan), who is running on a platform of "Love, Unity, and Mending the Fabric of Society."
The humor in "Unpresidented" is very much of the "South Park" variety, with plenty of biting satire and crude jokes. There are hilarious scenes at a Trump-like rally, in which Spade promises to "make America white again," and a debate, where Spade admits that he doesn't know anything about foreign policy but promises to "bomb the hell out of anybody who looks at us cross-eyed."
The animation deploys a unique visual style that is reminiscent of '80s cartoons like G.I. Joe or The Transformers, with exaggerated character designs and bold colors. The voice acting is also top-notch, with Slater bringing just the right amount of smarm to his portrayal of Spade, and Duke providing a hilarious performance as the amoral campaign manager.
Overall, "Unpresidented" is a very funny, very timely satire of American politics. It lampoons everything from the media's obsession with horse-race politics to the shady influence of money in politics. While it may be a bit too crass for some viewers, it's definitely worth checking out for anyone who enjoys political humor with a bite.
