Takumi's legend as the undefeatable Touge racer is challenged by a new challenger. Takumi is caught off-guard when his father mentions that the Trueno is due for an overhaul. Meanwhile, Keisuke is approached by Kyoichi Sudo of the NightKids, a powerful street racing team, who challenges him to a race. Keisuke is undecided, but Takeshi Nakazato of the Myogi NightKids team taunts and insults him, pushing Keisuke to accept the challenge. Keisuke is determined to prove his worth to the NightKids, but he underestimates Sudo's skills and loses the race.

Meanwhile, Takumi discovers that the new challenger is Ryosuke Takahashi, the leader of the RedSuns, a professional street racing team. Ryosuke proposes a race between his Rx-7 and Takumi's Trueno on the Akagi mountain pass. Takumi is hesitant at first, as the RedSuns are known to be a formidable opponent. However, he eventually agrees to the race, eager to test his skills against a worthy opponent.

The race begins, and Ryosuke quickly gains the upper hand, taking advantage of the Rx-7's superior speed and handling. Takumi struggles to keep up, realizing that he might not be as unbeatable as he thought. However, he refuses to give up, determined to fight until the end. With the Trueno's underpowered engine, Takumi must use all his driving skills to keep up with Ryosuke. In a desperate move, he decides to put his faith in the Trueno and attempt a dangerous maneuver that could only be achieved with his car. The maneuver proves successful, and Takumi overtakes Ryosuke, winning the race.

Takumi's victory is celebrated by his friends and family, who are amazed by his incredible driving skills. However, Takumi is left with a sense of uncertainty, realizing that there are still many challenges and opponents he has yet to face. As he drives home, he contemplates the future, wondering what other challenges await him on the mountain passes of Gunma.
