Indian Doctor is a drama series that originally aired on BBC One from 2010 to 2013. Set in the 1960s, the show follows the story of Dr. Prem Sharma, played by Sanjeev Bhaskar, who relocates from India to the small Welsh mining village of Trefelin with his wife Kamini, played by Ayesha Dharker.
Upon arriving in Trefelin, Prem takes on the role of the local GP, replacing Dr. Elwyn, who has recently retired. However, he is met with hostility from the locals, who are wary of his Indian background and hesitant to trust him as their new doctor. Despite this, Prem is determined to prove his worth and show the community that he is a capable and caring physician.
Throughout the series, Prem faces a number of challenges as he tries to navigate life in Trefelin. He comes up against cultural differences, language barriers and racism from some members of the community. However, he also forms close relationships with others and gradually earns the trust of his patients, who come to appreciate his compassionate approach to healthcare.
One of the main themes of Indian Doctor is the clash of cultures that exists between the Indian-born Prem and the predominantly Welsh community in Trefelin. This is explored in a nuanced way, with the show acknowledging both the difficulties that come with cultural differences, as well as the potential for shared understanding and acceptance. As the series progresses, we see Prem and Kamini become more integrated into the community, learning more about Welsh culture and traditions, while also sharing aspects of their own heritage with others.
Another important aspect of the show is the way it explores social issues and wider political contexts of the time. The 1960s was a time of great change in Britain, with issues such as immigration, healthcare, and class struggle at the forefront of public debate. Indian Doctor doesn't shy away from these issues, with storylines touching on issues such as race relations, workers' rights, and the changing face of healthcare in the country.
The cast of Indian Doctor is excellent, with Sanjeev Bhaskar delivering a standout performance as Prem. He manages to balance the character's sense of duty and professionalism with his warmth and compassion, making him a likeable and relatable protagonist. Ayesha Dharker is also excellent as Kamini, bringing to life the character's intelligence, wit, and strong sense of identity. Jacob Oakley is also memorable as Richard Sharpe, a young boy with learning difficulties who forms a close friendship with Prem.
Overall, Indian Doctor is an engaging drama series that combines strong performances with thoughtful storytelling. It's a show that manages to balance social commentary with an emotional depth that makes it both relevant and entertaining. If you're looking for a well-crafted drama that explores issues of identity, community, and cultural difference, then Indian Doctor is definitely worth checking out.
